The Manchester Sports Guild was an iconic music venue, situated
on the site of the present Urbis building, that was closed in the late 1970s
for renovation of the area. It was regarded as one of the most important venues
for live folk music in the country. It had featured regular jazz, blues and
folk music throughout the 1960s and 70s but it is the folk music aspect that
the concert recalled. The venue showcased all the top acts of the day, including
Paul Simon, Billy Connolly, Barbara Dickson, Mike Harding, Christy Moore, and
many others.
Many local performers featured in the concert, including Alan Bell, Gary and
Vera Aspey, John Howarth of the Oldham Tinkers, Marie Little, Pete Ryder, Stanley
Accrington, The Hometowners and Tony Downes, Arthur Wakefield and the Beggerman's
Gerry Brady. Although I couldn't stay for the show I was able to catch some
shots of those performers taking part:
