Photos taken at ‘A night at the MSG’

Saturday, November 12th 2011 @ the Ukrainian Club, Cheetham Hill

The Manchester Sports Guild was an iconic music venue, situated on the site of the present Urbis building, that was closed in the late 1970s for renovation of the area. It was regarded as one of the most important venues for live folk music in the country. It had featured regular jazz, blues and folk music throughout the 1960s and 70s but it is the folk music aspect that the concert recalled. The venue showcased all the top acts of the day, including Paul Simon, Billy Connolly, Barbara Dickson, Mike Harding, Christy Moore, and many others.

Many local performers featured in the concert, including Alan Bell, Gary and Vera Aspey, John Howarth of the Oldham Tinkers, Marie Little, Pete Ryder, Stanley Accrington, The Hometowners and Tony Downes, Arthur Wakefield and the Beggerman's Gerry Brady. Although I couldn't stay for the show I was able to catch some shots of those performers taking part:
